Jace's First Haircut

My face flushed, my heart began pounding in my ears, and Earth itself split in two. I felt myself falling down into an endless pit--okay, maybe a tad dramatic.

I always imagined Jace with long blond curly locks that caused him to be mistaken for a girl. Don't get me wrong, I didn't want people to think he was a girl-I just wanted to enjoy his beautiful baby hair for a while. He grew it out to about "surfer dude" length but that is where it ended.

My visions of an abundance of pictures, prior to an unsure trip to my neighbor (a hairstylist), where I would wipe tears away as snippets of Jace's hair fell to the ground, were brought to a nails-on-a-chalkboard, needle-on-a-record, kind of screeching halt by a five-year-old with safety scissors.

I was being "professionally developed" so Eric was at home watching the kids. He decided to take a shower before work (probably a good thing). Little did he know, Connor had a plan...Connor decided Jace needed a haircut so he climbed up on the kitchen table to retrieve the necessary tool.

The scene ends with Eric getting out of the shower only to see a guilty five-year-old holding safety scissors. "What are you doing?" he questions with a tinge of "uh oh" in his voice.
"I was cutting paper" Connor unconvincingly replies. Just then, a smiling baby Jace waddles from behind him-his shoulders covered in the hair that once was on his head. Eric took a deep breath, let it out, and said "Connor, go to your room."

  1. What a cool story. You will be really glad when you (and Jace and Eric and Connor) grow up that you have these recorded. Doesn't writing make thoughts clearer and more vivid? I find that when I write something - especially memoir - that I really do remember the details more clearly.

Wow, look at those big teeth! Neat thing about hair is that it will grow back. Think of the tears and angst you were spared. Connor may have actually done you a favor. Don't let him do any dentistry on his little bro though.

Did you ever cut your own hair when you were a shrimp? I remember this picture of me at Valentines day holding up a paper heart with a big divot cut out of the front of my hair. Self-imposed. I must have been about 4. My dad always said, "The difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is two weeks." OK it may take more than a couple weeks for that bad haircut.

I hope that your new school year is beginning famously.

    Peace - T

  2. Haha...the haircut incident has definitely spurred a plethora of "tool safety talks" with Connor so I think we will avoid any further damage. However, now that you mention dentistry maybe I'll have Eric discuss the correct use of pliers with him tomorrow.

I know I chopped my bangs when I was about 12. I was unaware of the length difference when wet so I looked quite ridiculous. I have to agree with your dad...it was about two weeks and I wasn't completely mortified anymore.

I am so glad you got me blogging! It has been such a cool experience and although I am not always diligent I find that the more I do it the more I am addicted! It really does help put things into perspective and helps me live life more fully and aware. Thanks!
